Harkness Preserve

Near the trail's beginning, one will find a five acre stand of American Chestnut (Castanea dentata). These chestnuts began declining in the 1970's at the time the chestnut blight (Chryphonectria parasitica) invaded this stand. As the main trunks of these trees succumb to the blight, these trees will again resprout.
