Arboretum Planting, April 21, 2005

On Thursday, April 21, 2005, several volunteers assisted Penn State University and the Pennsylvania Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation in planting over 650 BC3F2 generation seed at the Penn State University Arboretum. We thank all those who participated in the event and hope to have as smooth a planting next spring!

PA-TACF volunteers = Dave Lazor, Tom Pugel, Jim Walizer, Alex Day, Tracey Coulter, Gerald Clair, Chandis Klinger, Lee Saufley, Jim Egenreider, Tim Phelps
Arboretum volunteers = Donald Partch and the Balkeys - Cheryl, Darren, Matt and Seth

This picture was taken looking to the Northern plots in the Arboretum planting. Until this planting, seed had only been planted in the Southern plots.
This shows the group planting chestnuts in the 5th plot of Meadowview B3F2 material planted so far at the PSU Arboretum.
Here is the finished product after planting of the 5th Meadowview B3F2 plot. 127 seed were planted in this plot.

Jim Walizer stands among 3 year old Meadowview BC3F2 trees. These trees were planted in 2002 as seedlings and represent the first BC3F2 trees planted within TACF.

Here, the group is planting PA-TACF B3F2 material. In the foreground are Matt and Cheryl Balkey. Chandis Klinger is the man in blue. And Lee Saufley stands behind him.
Seth was tasked with cutting holes in the landscape fabric with a utility knife. I don't think I've ever seen a kid so happy to be planting chestnuts!
