MARYLAND CHAPTER ACTIVITIES, FALL 2004

On November 19, 2004, TACF Staff Pathologist Fred Hebard visited the Thorpewood Orchard in Thurmont, MD. The orchard was inoculated in the summer of 2004 in order to test the blight resistance of the first backcross generation planted there. Read more about the orchard and the preliminary evaluation of these trees resistance by clicking here.

On November 20, 2004, the chapter invited 50 "Chestnut Scholars" from Carrol County school to have a hands on look at what it's like to help restore the American chestnut. Seedlings from the Turner Farm at Sugarloaf Mountain were transplanted from the nursery into the orchard site. Also, other seedlings were distributed to the attending scholars so that they could start their own orchards.
