Fieldwork
Preserving the NY State gene pool
Finding new adult American chestnut trees with new genetic backgrounds adapted to NY State, and following through from pollination to planting their seeds is an important task. This effort broadens the genetic pool providing "mother" trees for pollination with our research-developed resistant trees when available or providing juvenile embryos with new genes.

Research
Genetic Transfer at SUNY Syracuse

The New York Chapter is helping to plan and provide seed money for a genetic research program at SUNY's College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse. The program has made recent breakthroughs in its schedule to produce a blight-resistant American chestnut seedling.

Education
Building manpower for reforestation.

An educational program was developed and tested for grades 3 – 5 by a team of teachers headed by Dr. Donald Birdd, a professor of science education at Buffalo State. The NY Chapter has supplied learner kits and materials with instructions for their use to over 200 schools throughout NY State.
